Project Checklist
As you prepare your first essay, please note the following.
- When saving your file for attachment, include your last name or initials in the file name. For example, smithessay1.doc —or— adhproject2.doc.
- To make things easier at my end, in your email message say, “Here is my project 1” and add your name so I know what you have sent. When I open your email, the file is saved in your course folder, and if the file name is merely “essay1.doc,” I have no way of knowing whose it is.
- Be sure your name is in the essay itself, preferably as a header or footer, and number the pages.
- Include a cover page with your name, the title, project number, date, etc. Be sure my name is on your paper if you mail or drop it off so that our mail room gets it to me.
- Include a page at the end with your list of selected sources, documents, etc.
- Please include all parts of your paper in one file. If you want to submit photos separately, that’s fine. Just tell me what you are doing in your email.
- If you have questions about writing format, see my Writing Tips page. Also, look over my plagiarism page if you have any doubts about what is proper use of sources.

Submit your essay in Microsoft Word, Word Perfect or rich text format as a file attached to an email message.
Or—submit it by US Mail to:
J. Sage, History 121/2
NVCC Extended Learning Institute
8333 Little River Turnpike
Annandale, Virginia 22003-3796
Or drop off your essay in person at the ELI Distance Learning Center at 8000 Forbes Place, Springfield, just outside the 495 Beltway off Braddock Road. I do not have an office on campus. An assignment drop off box is available outside the ELI entrance after hours. |

Submission:
- The dates on the assignment sheet and checklist are for your guidance. It is in your best interest to follow them.
- You do not have to request an extension for an extra day or two, but if you are a week or more behind, let me know. The object is for you to finish the course successfully and on time.
- You do NOT have to submit your projects in order. Indicate on the cover page what project you are doing, and indicate also if it includes a site visit report.
- Be sure to read my comments on returned essays—if your first essay was not as good as it might have been, following suggestions will help you with your next grade.
- I welcome ideas for projects not on the list. A number of suggested projects have come from student proposals.
I have had exceptionally fine written work from distance students.
Take your time and do them carefully and well.
