
Lincoln's
Memorial faces the Capitol from the opposite end of the mall, with the
Washington Monument in between. Inscribed on the walls inside the Memorial
are his Gettysburg and Second Inaugural addresses. The former is far
mroe famous, the latter in the judgment of many, far more profound.

Lincoln came to Washington only once, and he stayed until his death.
Although he traveled short distances--to the Antietam Battlefield to
visit general McClellan and to inspect Richmond after it had fallen
to Grant's army--he never really left, and his presence has been felt
here ever since
